Some model railroad enthusiasts update their landscape in accordance with the seasons and have produced unique worlds with their creations. Having a model train track in Canada allows train buffs to enjoy reimagining designs and rebuilding portions of their layout throughout the year.

You too can design a model train track for the fall season. This can be a great fun thing to do with your kids to keep them occupied after-school or as a family night event.

Add Fall Foliage in Your Model Train Set

The colours of fall attract people to the countryside to capture that perfect picture or enjoy the crisp air as they hike through fallen leaves. This landscape can be portrayed in your model train layout with a bit of imagination and creation.

Whether you buy scale trees or decide to make it all yourself, the addition of colours and foliage should highlight your scenery. Make the land spotted with sugar maples, red oak, dogwood, or beech trees to emphasize the rich yellow, orange, red, and browns of the season. There are dozens of variations to consider such as fallen leaves under the forest trees, or loose leaves scattered through the village and collected in leave piles in yards.

Don’t forget about the turf cover as the Fall season brings changes to the ground as well. Strategically place brown, yellow, and red clumps of shrubs and moss along the rail line, roads, and under trees.

Another detail to attend to is the physical appearance of any figurines such as people and the clothing worn. Picture yourself walking in the fall. What are you wearing? A jacket or a heavy sweatshirt? Perhaps a hat and boots?

Add Pumpkin and Barns in the Track

Fall brings reminiscences of school trips to a local farm to run through corn mazes, climb hay bales, tractor rides, and of course, picking out the perfect pumpkin. Why not create those childhood memories with a farm setting. Create a small field with a scarecrow and perhaps the all-time favourite, an apple orchard!

Add a special touch by including Thanksgiving or Oktoberfest activities to your town!

Add Spooky Items and Halloween Décor

Of course, the most popular fall activity is Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve. Turn the ordinary townsperson into a ghost, or goblin, complete with mini jack-o-lanterns dotting the streets. A shaded light beaming onto zombies in a makeshift graveyard would add a spooky atmosphere.
